Nigeria Switches to Digital TV, Expands Free Access to Information

Nigeria has officially completed its long awaited transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation agenda after years of delays.

The Federal Government said the Digital Switch Over programme will provide Nigerians with access to up to 100 free to air television channels through set top boxes, compatible smart televisions and the FreeTV mobile application without monthly subscription fees.

Beyond improved picture and sound quality, the initiative is expected to expand access to information, educational and cultural content for millions of Nigerians, while creating new opportunities for broadcasters, content creators and technology businesses. The government also projects that the programme will generate jobs, stimulate investments and contribute more than ₦600 billion to the economy.

Despite optimism surrounding the rollout, concerns remain over the affordability of set top boxes, infrastructure readiness and nationwide implementation. However, officials insist the new digital broadcasting system will promote inclusive access to information and help bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities.
