Tensions Rise in South Africa as Protesters Demolish Church Building in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, South Africa — Tensions escalated in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, as a weekly demonstration organised by the March and March movement reportedly turned destructive, with protesters targeting properties amid ongoing anti immigrant unrest.

The protesters reportedly attacked a branch of Living Waters Church International, alleging that the place of worship was owned by a foreign national.

During the demonstration, protesters were seen throwing bricks at the church building, while an excavator was later brought in to demolish the structure.

The church building was eventually pulled down, after which demonstrators gathered around the rubble, with some reportedly celebrating the destruction.

The incident has renewed concerns over rising anti immigrant sentiments and the safety of foreign nationals and their properties in parts of South Africa.

While residents have the right to express grievances through peaceful demonstrations, the destruction of places of worship and private property raises serious concerns about public safety, respect for the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
