Senator Emmanuel Nwachukwu, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, has highlighted his interventions in power infrastructure, road rehabilitation, youth employment, environmental emergencies and community development as he marks his first year in the Senate.
Nwachukwu, who took the oath of office on October 8, 2025, following a by-election in August and the unfortunate demise of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, said his first year had been defined by service, responsibility and a commitment to representing the interests of his constituents.
In an address marking the anniversary, the senator said he remained focused on addressing the district’s developmental challenges despite legal disputes surrounding his mandate.
He noted that deteriorating roads, gully erosion, unreliable electricity supply and the need for employment opportunities among young people required urgent attention, regardless of the legal proceedings.
On power infrastructure, Nwachukwu said he had engaged the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other federal power authorities to address right-of-way challenges in Nnobi and accelerate the completion of the Nnewi Injection Substation.
He said the interventions were aimed at improving electricity supply to Anambra South, a major commercial and industrial hub.
On road infrastructure, the senator disclosed that he sponsored a motion in the Senate drawing attention to the collapsed bridge and failed sections of the Okija Spur–Ihembosi–Ukpor–Ebenator–Ezinifite Road.
According to him, the motion secured Senate resolutions directing the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to undertake urgent engineering interventions along the corridor.
Nwachukwu also highlighted his participation in the Electoral Act amendment process, stating that he was among 15 senators who voted against provisions allowing manual alternatives to electronic transmission of election results and supported mandatory real-time electronic transmission.
In the area of emergency response, he said he worked with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Red Cross to secure and distribute relief materials to victims of fire outbreaks, including affected families in Ozubulu.
He added that he had also drawn NEMA’s attention to victims of a building collapse in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area.
Addressing environmental challenges, the senator said he had engaged the Ecological Fund Office and the Federal Ministry of Environment on interventions to tackle gully erosion threatening homes and farmlands in Aguata, Orumba, Ihiala and neighbouring communities.
On youth development, Nwachukwu said he was facilitating federal employment opportunities for qualified young people from the senatorial district across ministries, departments and agencies.
He described the initiative as part of efforts to improve access to stable employment and create opportunities for young people to build careers in public service.
The senator further announced that the first phase of installing more than 3,000 solar-powered streetlights across Anambra South was ongoing.
He said the project was intended to improve public lighting and enhance safety in communities across the district.
Nwachukwu also cited his decision to retain the administrative secretary of his predecessor, the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, as part of efforts to preserve institutional memory and ensure continuity in constituent services.
He added that he had maintained consultations with traditional rulers, presidents-general, youth organisations, women’s groups and other stakeholders across the seven local government areas of Anambra South, as well as members of the district’s diaspora communities in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.
The senator, who expressed appreciation to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, and the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), said collaboration between the state government and the National Assembly caucus had helped align state development priorities with federal interventions.
He also thanked community leaders, religious leaders, professionals, business operators and political stakeholders for their support and engagement.
Looking ahead, Nwachukwu said his first year in office represented the beginning of a broader development agenda rather than an end in itself.
He called for continued cooperation among the people of Aguata, Orumba North, Orumba South, Ihiala, Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo, expressing optimism that sustained collaboration would help build a stronger, safer and more prosperous Anambra South.
