The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum, Anambra State Chapter, has raised awareness about the dangers of cancer and the importance of early detection, announcing plans for free cervical cancer screening for female lawyers on October 24, 2026.

The announcement followed a cancer awareness health walk held in Awka on Saturday, October 17, which commenced at the NBA premises, passed through Quarter Junction and ended at Solution Fun City. Participants also benefited from free blood pressure and blood sugar checks.

Chairman of the NBA Awka Branch, Barr. Nnamdi Raphael Anagor, said the walk formed part of activities marking Cancer Awareness Week, aimed at educating the public on cancer prevention and encouraging regular medical examinations.

Anagor particularly emphasised prostate cancer awareness among men, urging those aged 40 and above to seek medical advice and undergo appropriate health checks. He also encouraged regular physical exercise and healthier lifestyle choices.

Facilitator of the NBA Women Forum, Awka Branch, Barr. Obianuju Nwakpadolu, highlighted prostate and colon cancers among men, as well as breast and cervical cancers among women, stressing that early detection could improve health outcomes.

She encouraged women to undergo appropriate medical examinations, remain alert to unusual breast changes and seek prompt medical attention when necessary. She also advised women to consult qualified healthcare professionals about cervical cancer screening and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.

Nwakpadolu disclosed that the forum would organise free cervical cancer screening for female lawyers across the NBA on October 24. She appealed to the government to expand access to HPV vaccines and provide cervical cancer screening services, including Pap smear tests, at subsidised rates.

The health walk and screening initiative underscore the importance of preventive healthcare, with the forum urging members of the public to prioritise regular medical checks and adopt healthier lifestyles.
