A vulnerable girl child receiving treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, has been visited by Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Esther Onyekesi, following an alleged abuse incident by her mother.
The visit brought renewed attention to the need to protect children from abuse and ensure that victims receive the medical care and support they need to recover.
During the visit, the Commissioner was briefed on the girl’s condition and treatment.
She was also informed that the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Maureen Umeakuewulu, had personally settled the child’s medical bills and continued to provide food for her during her admission.
Moved by the intervention, Mrs. Onyekesi commended the CMD for her compassion and generosity, describing her support as a powerful demonstration of humanity and concern for a vulnerable child.
The Commissioner assured that the Ministry would work with relevant agencies to guarantee the girl’s continued care and protection, while ensuring that the case receives appropriate attention under the law.
She also called on residents to speak up against child abuse, neglect and violence, urging anyone with information about suspected cases to report to the Ministry or the nearest security agency.
Mrs. Onyekesi thanked the hospital’s management and staff for their commitment to the child’s welfare and treatment.
She reiterated the Soludo administration’s resolve to protect vulnerable children and strengthen measures against abuse across Anambra State.
The intervention highlights the importance of coordinated action by government agencies, healthcare providers and the public in ensuring that children are protected and victims of abuse are not left without care.
