Bayelsa Horror: Monarch’s Son in Police Net Over Alleged Burning of Man
Police in Bayelsa State have arrested Ibobuminate Oweifa, the son of the traditional ruler of Okodi community in Ogbia Local Government Area, over the alleged burning of a man accused of stealing firewood.
The victim, identified as Godgift Biko, suffered severe burns and is receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Edebor, confirmed the arrest, stating that officers responded promptly after receiving reports of the incident. The Divisional Police Officer rescued the victim, ensured he received immediate medical attention and arrested the suspect.
According to the police, the suspect claimed he caught the victim attempting to steal his firewood and that an argument followed before the incident occurred. Investigators stressed that this is only the suspect’s account and that a full investigation is underway.
The police condemned jungle justice and all forms of violence, reaffirming that anyone found responsible for actions that endanger human life will face prosecution. The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be charged in court after investigations are completed.
