Awka erosion disaster: Residents call for urgent government intervention

By Njideka Agbo | IchieTimes

Residents of Okpuno Ime Village in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State are calling for urgent government intervention following severe gully erosion triggered by torrential rainfall.

The erosion has reportedly caused fences to collapse and is threatening residential buildings and other properties in the community.

The advancing gully, compounded by flooding, has also disrupted local infrastructure, cutting off parts of the Okpuno Awka Road and threatening nearby electricity installations.

Displaced families and other residents have appealed to the Anambra State Government and the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, to urgently intervene with emergency relief and sustainable drainage and erosion control measures.

Residents say immediate action is needed to prevent further destruction and protect lives and property as the erosion continues to expand.
