Anambra Commissioner for Petroleum Advocates Practical Learning, Skills Development for Students

The Anambra State Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Charles Ofoegbu, has called on well meaning individuals, corporate organisations, and education stakeholders to invest in academic programmes that equip students with practical knowledge and hands on skills needed to succeed in today’s competitive world.
Professor Ofoegbu made the appeal while receiving the leadership of the Society of Petroleum Engineering Students (SPES), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, led by its President, Comrade Mmesoma Ikegwonu, alongside the Director of Socials, Comrade Michael Ikenga, during a courtesy visit to his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
Emphasising that the future of every society depends on how well it prepares its young people, the commissioner encouraged the students to remain focused, disciplined, and intentional in pursuing their academic and career goals. He advised them to cultivate the habit of listening, learning from experienced professionals, and embracing mentorship as a pathway to excellence. As part of efforts to expose them to industry best practices, he introduced the students to the Anambra State Petroleum and Energy Resources Company for further guidance and engagement.
Earlier, Comrade Ikegwonu informed the commissioner about the association’s upcoming orientation programme designed to introduce newly admitted students to the ethics, values, responsibilities, and opportunities within the petroleum engineering profession. He explained that the initiative is aimed at preparing students for successful careers from the very beginning of their academic journey.
The SPES President, however, appealed for greater support from the government and relevant stakeholders, pointing to inadequate laboratory facilities, insufficient funding, and limited internship opportunities as major challenges affecting students’ training. He stressed that addressing these gaps would produce graduates who are better equipped with the practical skills and experience required to contribute meaningfully to the growth of Nigeria’s petroleum and energy sector.
