By Emmanuel Chigbata

The Anambra State House of Assembly has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his swift intervention in the communal conflict between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities in Anambra East Local Government Area.

The commendation followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Anambra East Constituency, Hon. Obi Nweke, during plenary presided over by the Minority Leader, Right Honourable Johnbosco Akaegbobi. Nweke said the Governor’s prompt response to the escalation, including the deployment of joint security forces to the affected communities, helped restore law, order and normalcy.

The lawmaker expressed concern that the conflict, which he said stemmed from lingering land and resource disputes, had threatened lives, property and socio economic activities in the affected communities. He called for sustained efforts towards addressing the underlying issues and preventing a recurrence of the crisis.

The House also commended the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Boundary Committee, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders for their roles in efforts to resolve the dispute. The Majority Leader, Honourable Ikenna Ofodeme, Deputy Majority Leader, Honourable Jude Akpua, and Hon. Jude Umennajiego also commended the Governor’s intervention.

The lawmakers stressed that sustainable peace and security remained critical to the actualisation of the administration’s vision of a liveable and prosperous Anambra State, urging all stakeholders and residents of the affected communities to support efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.
