Court Remands Anambra Lawmaker On Charge Of Rape, Attempted Murder, Others
By Joseph Albert | Ichie Times
Hon. Bernard Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum State constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, has been remanded in the Awka Correctional Center on a charge of rape, attempted murder, assault occasioning harm, abduction and conduct likely to cause the breach of peace.
It was gathered that upon careful examination of the circumstances of the charge against the defendant, the presiding magistrate of the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court, Anambra State, U. E. Onochie, Esq., found probable cause to remand the defendant at the Correctional Center.
During preliminary enquiries, Hon. Udemezue stated that the arrest and allegations of crimes made against him were not unconnected with his political journeys, political activism in the state, especially his strong drive to facilitate community development in Ayamelum constituency, and his rough oppositional stance in the state politics as an only house member elected under the platform of the PDP, but later cross carpeted to the NDC.
He, however, blamed some opposition politicians in the state for his recent quagmires, adding that because he declined to join the ruling party in the state, APGA, and other political parties, his enemies now decided to fight back.
The case is adjourned to 25th November, 2026 for the police to report compliance.
