NDLEA rearrests convicted grandmother with drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has rearrested an 83 year old grandmother, Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday, with consignments of Methamphetamine and Colorado in Abia State, barely a year after she was convicted for drug related offences.

The octogenarian was arrested on Wednesday, October 7, at her residence in Ite Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, with quantities of the substances allegedly concealed around her waist and tied with a wrapper.

According to an NDLEA statement issued by its spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the latest arrest followed intelligence suggesting that the suspect operated a drug joint where criminal elements allegedly gathered and terrorised members of the community.

The agency said Uloma was first arrested on May 17, 2025, alongside her 32 year old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, at the same residence. During that operation, operatives recovered 50 grammes of methamphetamine, 522 grammes of skunk, 260 grammes of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grammes of tramadol.

Both women reportedly pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment or an option of a ₦200,000 fine each. They paid the fines and were released by the court.

The NDLEA said the elderly woman allegedly returned to the drug trade after her release and expanded her activities by establishing a location where suspected criminal elements reportedly gathered.
