Town union presidents are critical to reclaiming Anambra values – Mefor
The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, has described Presidents General of town unions as critical gatekeepers in the state government’s efforts to reclaim and restore lost societal values.
Mefor stated this on Saturday, October 3, 2026, when he visited the leadership of the Anambra State Association of Town Union Councils, ASTUC, at its office in Awka.
The Commissioner said the visit was aimed at formally establishing contact with the association and strengthening collaboration between the ministry and town unions for the development of the state.
According to him, the Solution Government recognises the critical role town unions play in grassroots development, noting that the administration is working towards making town unions the fourth tier of government.
Mefor said the expansion of his ministry beyond information was informed by the need to complement infrastructure development with value reorientation among the people.
“You are all seeing the good works of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo in infrastructure. What is remaining is value reformation. We cannot leave all these works for rogues, cultists and drug addicts,” he said.
He expressed concern over the involvement of some youths in kidnapping and other violent crimes, saying the government’s value reformation programme would seek to help those willing to abandon criminal activities while preventing others from joining.
“Our work is to salvage those who are willing to be saved and prevent others from joining. If we start now, those coming after us can continue from where we stop,” Mefor said.
The Commissioner disclosed that the ministry was forming a coalition of willing stakeholders to develop a blueprint for the value reformation campaign.
He said the manual had already been presented to the Governor and the Anambra State Executive Council, adding that implementation would involve legislation, moral suasion and enforcement, with particular attention to drug peddlers and suppliers.
Responding, ASTUC Chairman, Sir Vin Dike, assured the Commissioner of the association’s full partnership with the ministry in the value reformation campaign.
Dike, however, urged the government to involve town unions at the policy formulation stage, saying their input would help develop practical strategies for effective implementation at the grassroots.
