Woman arrested for allegedly disguising alcohol as bottled water for inmate
A woman identified as Shobowale Balikis has been intercepted by officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, while allegedly attempting to smuggle ethanol disguised as drinking water into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Abeokuta.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
According to the statement, correctional officers intercepted Balikis at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday while she was allegedly attempting to deliver a bottled water pack purportedly intended for an inmate.
Upon inspection, the officers reportedly discovered that the substance inside the bottle was ethanol and not drinking water.
The intervention prevented the substance from getting into the custodial facility, where it could have posed a security and disciplinary concern.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for the smuggling of contraband into custodial facilities.
He said the incident demonstrated the vigilance of correctional officers and the service’s commitment to maintaining safety, discipline and order within its facilities.
