NUJ ABS Chapel Holds September Congress, Reviews Promotion and Retirement Benefits

The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ ABS Awka Chapel, has held its September Congress, with members deliberating on issues affecting their welfare, career progression and the development of the chapel.
Speaking at the congress, Chapel Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Okonkwo, appreciated members for their resilience and commitment to their duties. He assured that the chapel would continue to protect members’ interests while working towards the growth and progress of the union.
The special guest, President General of Anambra State Association of Town Union Council Youth Wing, Comrade Ken Okoli, urged Ndi Anambra to embrace responsible citizenship and uphold the core values of Onye Anambra, including the fear of God, discipline, dignity of labour and ethnic tolerance. He said individuals and groups could contribute to positive change by taking responsibility in their communities and workplaces despite the challenges facing the country.
A senior ABS News staff member and NUJ State Council official, Comrade Ebele Ezeh, called for improved welfare for media workers, particularly retired ABS staff whose pensions and gratuities, according to her, remain unpaid. Contributing, Comrade Chibuzor Obidike, Comrade David Okpokwasili and others commended the current chapel executives for their efforts and urged them to remain focused on addressing issues affecting members.
The congress also deliberated on staff promotions, retirement benefits and other welfare concerns, stressing the need for proper attention to career progression and post service welfare. The meeting ended with the establishment of Welfare, Sports, Charity, Training and ICT committees by the Chairman to support the steady growth and development of the chapel.
