NUJ Anambra @35: Journalism Must Impact Governance – Experts Insist

Journalists must always ask: “how does my report impact on the delivery of good governance and affect society?”

This question, according to a veteran journalist and former Chairman of NUJ Anambra State Council, Sir. Victor Agusiobo, must define the profession in the modern age.

Sir Victor who stated this while delivering a paper as a speaker at the grand finale of the 2026 Press Week of Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and 35th anniversary ceremony of the council, emphasized that journalists must focus on stories that inspire action and bring about positive societal change.

According to him, journalism goes beyond content creation and sensationalism to meet the challenges of the modern age.

Mr. Agusibo described the recognition bestowed on him at the event as a fulfilment of years of dedicated service to the profession, noting that he had the privilege of leading the union both in military and democratic administrations.

Also speaking, a lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Dr. Obiorah Edogor, urged journalists to uphold ethical standards and professionalism, maintaining that credibility and public trust remain the greatest assets of the media.

In his remarks, the Action Alliance flag bearer for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Honourable Ikechukwu Okonkwo, commended the union for its commitment to truth and public enlightenment.

He encouraged journalists to continue drawing attention to the challenges faced by underserved communities.

Honourable Okonkwo, who attended the event in solidarity with the Man of the Year award recipient, Chief Martin Nwabueze described the honour as well deserved and reiterated his commitment to people-centred representation, inclusive legislation, and attracting investments that would improve the welfare of residents if elected.

The event attracted journalists, media stakeholders, government officials, and other distinguished guests from across the state, as the union reflected on its achievements and renewed its commitment to professional excellence and public service.
