Public Service Excellence Earns APGA Awka North, South Candidate, Nwankwo Green NUJ Honour

Former Anambra State Commissioner for Public Utilities, Hon. Obby Nwankwo, has been honoured by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, for his contributions to public service and longstanding relationship with the media.
Nwankwo, who is the APGA candidate for the Awka North and South Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, was recognised as part of activities marking the 35th anniversary of the NUJ Anambra State Council and its 2026 Press Week.
Receiving the award on his behalf, Mr Kenneth Ikechukwu described Nwankwo as a multiple portfolio commissioner whose responsibilities in government cut across different sectors and the 21 local government areas of the state.
He said Nwankwo served as Commissioner for Technology from 2014 to 2015, Commissioner for Public Utilities from 2015 to 2019 and Commissioner for Environment from 2019 to 2022.
Ikechukwu described Nwankwo as a friend of the media who has consistently recognised the important role of journalists in society, noting that his support for the media reflected an understanding of journalism as a tool for public information, accountability and democratic governance.
He said, “You cannot represent people without continually mirroring what is transpiring there with them,” stressing that Nwankwo’s relationship with journalists had remained an important part of his public service journey.
According to him, the move from the executive arm of government to legislative representation would provide Nwankwo with another platform to contribute to governance, effective representation and development.
Ikechukwu thanked the NUJ for the honour, describing it as an encouragement for Nwankwo to continue contributing to the development of Anambra State and the wellbeing of Ndi Anambra.
He also assured the union of Nwankwo’s continued partnership and support for initiatives aimed at advancing journalism and the public interest.
