Soludo Approves N500m to Upgrade COOUTH, Fund Critical Accreditations

The Anambra State Government has approved N500 million for the acquisition of major medical equipment and the accreditation of critical departments at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Maureen Umeakuewulu, disclosed this while defending the hospital’s 2025 financial year before the Public Accounts Committee of the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Umeakuewulu said the funding would support the hospital’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its facilities, acquire modern medical equipment and secure accreditation for key departments.
She expressed appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his continued support and commitment to repositioning the teaching hospital as a centre of excellence capable of delivering quality healthcare services to residents of Anambra and neighbouring states.
According to the CMD, the hospital has commenced several innovations and rejuvenation programmes aimed at improving healthcare delivery, strengthening its facilities and raising its standards to meet national and international benchmarks.
She explained that some departments require urgent accreditation and that the approved funds would facilitate the process, adding that the management was working to ensure that COOUTH achieves wider recognition in the healthcare sector.
Umeakuewulu also assured the lawmakers that the hospital’s 2026 budget would be implemented strictly in line with approved allocations, while the management would address observations and corrections raised during the review of its 2025 financial accounts.
The CMD thanked the Governor for his continued investment in the institution and appealed for sustained collaboration and support as the hospital pursues its vision of becoming a globally recognised centre of medical excellence.
