Residents Scoop Fuel From Leaking Tanker in Delta, Risk Explosion

Several residents risked their lives by scooping fuel from a leaking tanker along the City Gate area of Asaba, Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, attracted a large crowd as men and women were seen using buckets, jerrycans and other containers to collect the fuel spilling from the tanker.

Video footage circulating on social media showed residents gathered around the tanker despite the obvious risk of fire or explosion.

The development has raised fresh concerns over the dangers associated with fuel spillages, particularly when members of the public attempt to collect petroleum products from leaking tankers.

Safety experts have repeatedly warned that petrol vapour is highly flammable and can ignite from sources such as vehicle engines, electrical sparks, cigarettes or naked flames.

Residents are therefore advised to stay away from leaking tankers and immediately alert emergency responders and security agencies rather than attempting to scoop spilled fuel.

Authorities are also urged to cordon off such areas promptly to prevent members of the public from approaching the scene and exposing themselves to avoidable danger.

The incident serves as another reminder that what may appear to be an opportunity to obtain free fuel can quickly turn into a deadly disaster.
