Collapsed Anambra Hostel: Fresh Graduate Among Two Bodies Recovered From Rubble
By Ichie Times
The body of a fresh graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, has been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed Elite 5 Star Hostel in Amaokpala, near the institution in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Two bodies, a male and a female, have so far been recovered from the debris following the collapse of the hostel on Sunday night, July 26, 2026.
The female victim was identified by friends as Vivian Chinedum, a baker and fresh graduate of the Department of Food Science and Technology at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
Friends reportedly said Vivian moved into the hostel in March 2026.
Survivors of the incident said there had been warning signs shortly before the building collapsed. One of the occupants, Grace Nweke, said a food vendor alerted residents through their WhatsApp group at about 10pm that cracks had appeared on the hostel walls.
She said loud cracking sounds followed shortly after the warning, prompting occupants to flee the building.
Nweke, who reportedly moved into the hostel in January 2026, said she was unaware that the building was allegedly structurally unsafe before the incident.
She further claimed that occupants later learnt that previous residents had allegedly been asked to vacate the building because of its deteriorating condition.
The claim, however, remains subject to official investigation.
The collapsed hostel reportedly contained about 60 rooms and housed students and other residents.
The recovery of the victims has heightened concerns over building safety, structural integrity and the enforcement of construction regulations in the area.
Authorities are expected to establish the cause of the collapse and determine whether any negligence or regulatory breaches contributed to the tragedy.
