At Least 16 Killed as Ukraine, Russia Intensify Strikes Amid Stalled Peace Talks

At least 16 people have been killed in a fresh wave of Ukrainian and Russian strikes as the nearly four and a half year war between both countries intensifies amid a deadlock in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

The latest casualties were recorded in Russian occupied parts of Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine and Russian border regions, with the United Nations recently warning of a rise in civilian deaths linked to the ongoing conflict.

Russian installed authorities in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region said a Ukrainian strike on the Azov Sea village of Kyrylivka killed eight people, including two children, and injured 14 others. Ukraine had not immediately commented on the reported attack.

In northeastern Ukraine, a Russian drone strike on a private courier service facility in Sumy reportedly killed three drivers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as a double strike.

Other casualties were also reported in southern Ukraine, Russian border areas and the Russian occupied part of Kherson region.

The conflict also saw an escalation in attacks deep inside Russian territory, with Ukrainian drones reportedly targeting an oil refinery in Siberia’s Tyumen region, more than 1,000 miles from Moscow. The attack caused a fire after a drone fell within the refinery’s premises, according to the regional governor.

Russia claimed Ukraine launched more than 300 drones across its territory, while President Zelensky said Ukrainian forces also struck a factory in Kirov which he alleged supplies components for Russian weapons.

In Yekaterinburg, Russian authorities reported a drone attack that caused a fire at a parking area, while online retail giant Wildberries evacuated workers and suspended operations at a logistics facility in the city as a precaution.

Ukraine has defended its strikes on Russian territory as retaliation for Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian cities, while Moscow has accused Kyiv of escalating the conflict.

Efforts to negotiate an end to the war remain stalled, with the United States reportedly focused on other international crises and Russia continuing its military campaign in eastern Ukraine.
