Ondo Police Arrest Four Officers Over Viral Video Allegedly Containing Ethnic Remarks
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four officers featured in a viral stop and search video following allegations of unprofessional conduct and ethnically insensitive remarks directed at a member of the public.
The video, which was recorded along the Lagos Benin Expressway and circulated widely on social media, allegedly showed one of the officers making a remark suggesting that a motorist could be detained on the basis of being Igbo. The video has since sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over ethnic profiling and professionalism in law enforcement.
The officers identified and taken into custody are ASP Elomore Sodayo, Inspector Adefila Adewale, Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi and Inspector Odusola Peter.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of responsibility of each officer.
The Command stressed that the Nigeria Police Force does not condone misconduct, incivility or any action capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division or bringing the Force into disrepute.
According to the police, officers are required to uphold professionalism, respect human dignity and comply with the Force’s Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures at all times.
The Command assured the public that the investigation would be conducted with fairness, transparency and accountability, adding that any officer found to have violated established ethical standards would face appropriate disciplinary action.
The Ondo State Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to professional, intelligence led and community oriented policing, while urging members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through official complaint channels.
The incident has further fuelled public discussions on police accountability and the need for law enforcement officers to treat all Nigerians equally, regardless of ethnicity or background.
