ANSEC Approves Sweeping Reforms to Combat Erosion, Modernise Transport and Strengthen Community Development

The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has approved a series of strategic measures aimed at tackling erosion, improving transportation, enhancing road safety and deepening community participation in development across the state.
Briefing journalists after the Executive Council meeting held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the Government House, Awka, the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, said the decisions reflect Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s commitment to addressing critical environmental and infrastructural challenges confronting Anambra.
Dr. Mefor described erosion as the state’s greatest environmental threat, recalling Governor Soludo’s recent declaration of a state of emergency on the environment, which encouraged residents to clear blocked drainage channels while the government evacuated the debris.
He expressed satisfaction with the high level of public compliance, estimating it at between 80 and 90 percent.
To sustain the momentum, he announced that ANSEC has approved a community driven approach to erosion control, empowering communities to take responsibility for protecting their environment.
The initiative will discourage harmful practices such as dumping refuse in drainage channels, building on waterways and discharging water onto roads, while also extending environmental awareness campaigns to primary and secondary schools to instill responsible environmental habits among young people.
On transportation, the Council approved the modernisation and digitalisation of motor parks across the state to improve safety, efficiency and commuter comfort.
Dr. Mefor warned that operators who fail to upgrade their facilities after the government’s grace period will have their parks shut down until they comply with the approved standards.
The Executive Council also approved stricter traffic enforcement measures, including stiffer penalties for traffic offences and mandatory mental status examinations for motorists involved in dangerous driving.
According to the Commissioner, the measures are intended to reduce road crashes and protect lives and property across the state.
Dr. Mefor further commended Ndi Anambra for embracing the Soludo administration’s Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) initiative, which has enabled communities to collaborate with the government in delivering roads, schools, hospitals and other development projects.
He urged residents to sustain the partnership, stressing that meaningful development can only be achieved through collective responsibility between government and the people.
