Anambra Assembly Works Committee Inspects Abba Erosion Project, Orders Immediate Correction of Drainage Defects

The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has inspected the ongoing erosion control project at Umugama, Ire Village, Abba, in Njikoka Local Government Area, directing the contractor to immediately correct defects observed in sections of the drainage construction.

The inspection, led by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Emma Nwafor, was aimed at assessing the quality of work and ensuring that the project is being executed in line with approved specifications.

During the visit, the lawmakers identified areas of concern in the drainage construction and instructed the contractor to rectify the defects without delay to guarantee the durability and effectiveness of the project.

Hon. Nwafor emphasised the importance of delivering quality work, noting that the erosion control project is vital to protecting lives and property in the community, which has battled the devastating impact of erosion for decades.

He urged the contractor to accelerate the pace of work while maintaining the required engineering standards, assuring that the House Committee would sustain oversight to ensure value for public funds and strict compliance with project specifications.

Also speaking, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House and Member representing the area, Hon. Jude Akpua, recalled that the Umugama erosion site has caused extensive destruction to homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure over the years, including a major road linking Njikoka and Dunukofia constituencies, thereby disrupting movement and economic activities.

Responding, the contractor handling the project, Mr. Gozie Igwe, assured the committee that all issues identified during the inspection would be promptly addressed and the necessary corrections made in line with the approved standards and specifications.
