KENNETH OKONKWO EXPLAINS WHY ADC PICKED AMAECHI AS ATIKU’S RUNNING MATE

The spokesperson for the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has dismissed reports suggesting that he opposed the emergence of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the party’s vice presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Okonkwo explained that his earlier position was never directed against Amaechi. He said he only believed that, for the sake of equity and political balance, the vice presidential slot should ideally have gone to the South East.

According to him, the provisions of the Electoral Act and the circumstances surrounding the party’s primary election made such an arrangement difficult. He noted that several South East politicians who could have been considered were not eligible because they had not met the party’s membership requirement before the primary.

Okonkwo stated that Amaechi’s strong performance during the presidential primary, where he secured more than 500 votes, made him a major stakeholder whose supporters could not be ignored. He said the party’s decision was therefore based on political realities and the need to strengthen unity ahead of the general election.

While expressing satisfaction with the outcome, he maintained that party leaders should have consulted stakeholders from the South East before announcing the vice presidential candidate. He said such engagement would have helped explain the challenges facing the party and reassure the people of the region.

Okonkwo also revealed that Atiku Abubakar was outside Nigeria when the initial announcement was made. According to him, upon his return, the former Vice President immediately initiated consultations with party leaders and other stakeholders before the decision was finalised, describing the move as a demonstration of democratic leadership.

He added that Atiku recognised his commitment and contributions despite his previous criticisms, while accusing his former principal, Peter Obi, of betraying him after their political alliance.

The interview has added fresh insight into the political calculations behind the ADC’s presidential ticket, as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general election.
