Last Minute Goal Ends South Africa’s World Cup Dream as Canada Make History
Canada secured a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Africa 1-0 with a dramatic stoppage time winner.
The breakthrough came in added time when Stephen Eustaquio struck a powerful shot from outside the penalty area to hand the co hosts their first ever qualification for the World Cup Round of 16.
Canada dominated much of the contest and created several scoring opportunities but were repeatedly denied by South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and a determined defence. Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, returning from a hamstring injury, came off the bench in the second half and immediately added pace and creativity to Canada’s attack.
South Africa also produced moments of resistance and threatened on the counter attack, but they were unable to find the breakthrough as the match appeared destined for extra time.
Eustaquio’s late winner sparked wild celebrations among Canadian players and supporters, ending South Africa’s impressive World Cup campaign.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 as they continue their bid for a memorable run at the tournament.
