Ezeobi Blames Blocked Drainages for Road Failure, Urges Residents to Stop Dumping Refuse

By Chibuzo Obidike | IchieTimes

Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, has urged residents and social media content creators to expose blocked drainage channels and discourage indiscriminate refuse disposal, warning that the practices contribute to road deterioration across the state.

Ezeobi made the appeal after encountering people dumping refuse into a roadside drainage channel near Ikenga Mall, where he stopped and insisted that the waste be removed.

Addressing content creators, the Commissioner urged them to highlight blocked drainages in their communities and report locations where people refuse to clear the channels. He said residents could contact him directly with such information, stressing that protecting Anambra’s infrastructure was a collective responsibility and not the duty of Governor Chukwuma Soludo alone.

According to Ezeobi, when drainage channels become blocked with refuse and silt, rainwater cannot flow freely and may spill onto road surfaces. The water can weaken pavement layers and the underlying soil, accelerating erosion, pothole formation and, in severe cases, road failure.

He stressed that even well constructed roads require proper drainage, regular maintenance and responsible public behaviour to remain durable. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse, he noted, can increase avoidable repair costs and undermine government investments in road infrastructure.

The Commissioner called on residents to dispose of waste properly, keep drainage channels clear and report blocked drains to the relevant authorities. He also challenged content creators to use their platforms to promote responsible environmental practices rather than merely criticising government.

Ezeobi maintained that preserving public infrastructure begins with everyday community habits, urging residents to take ownership of their environment and protect roads built for their collective benefit.
