What If It Happens to Your Own Child?’ FIDA Chair Challenges Nigerians On Domestic Abuse

Awka: The Chairperson of FIDA, Anambra State Chapter, Barr. Amara Muojeke, has challenged Nigerians to stop looking away when women and children are abused, asking a simple but powerful question: “What if your own child faces the same situation?”

Speaking at the Special Congress of the NUJ ABS Chapel in Awka, Muojeke condemned the growing culture of silence around domestic violence and discrimination against vulnerable members of society.

She particularly criticised situations where women, widows and female children are pushed aside or treated as less deserving of protection, care and inheritance.

Muojeke said the responsibility to protect vulnerable people does not belong to government alone, insisting that community members who witness abuse must speak out.

She noted that the Anambra State Government has established an SGBV and Inheritance Unit under the Ministry of Justice, providing a pathway for victims and witnesses to report cases.

She said the unit can work with the police gender desk, Ministry of Women Affairs and other relevant authorities to ensure victims receive protection and cases are properly prosecuted.

The FIDA chairperson also warned against the maltreatment of children employed as domestic workers, stressing that adults have a legal responsibility to protect children from abuse.

She called for increased public knowledge of laws protecting women and children, saying ignorance should not be allowed to become an excuse for abuse.

Muojeke’s message was clear: protecting one person strengthens the entire community.
“If I have security and you don’t have security, there is no security.”

She urged residents to turn that principle into action by reporting abuse whenever they encounter it.
