Ogbo-Ogwu Shooting: Five Hospitalised as Anambra CP Orders Investigation

ONITSHA — Tension gripped Ogbo-Ogwu Market, Onitsha, on Wednesday morning after a shooting incident left five persons hospitalised, with four reportedly sustaining gunshot injuries.

The incident, which occurred on August 19, reportedly erupted after police operatives allegedly stopped and pursued a trader said to be carrying drugs.

According to traders, the attempted arrest escalated into a confrontation and later a riot, with gunshots reportedly fired as police officers tried to leave the area.

One of the victims, Obiora Nweke, alleged that he was shot in the leg by a man in mufti who identified himself as a police officer while he was attempting to find out what was happening.

Another victim, Friday Osisi, said he sustained a head injury after he was hit with a stone while trying to calm the situation.

The development has prompted police action, with the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, visiting the victims in hospital and ordering a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The CP is expected to establish what led to the discharge of firearms and determine responsibility based on the findings.

No death has been reported as of the time of filing this report.
