Anambra Woman Allegedly Sells Newborn for ₦2.5m, Gives Mother ₦300,000

The Anambra State Government has uncovered an alleged child trafficking case involving a self acclaimed woman of God who reportedly facilitated the sale of a newborn for ₦2.5 million and gave the child’s mother ₦300,000.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, disclosed this in a statement shared on the ministry’s official social media platform.
According to the commissioner, the suspect, identified as Precious Uchenna, had earlier accommodated the young mother after she was reportedly rejected by her family.
However, rather than seek the intervention of the appropriate government authorities, Uchenna allegedly negotiated and facilitated the transfer of the newborn to her sister without the involvement of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare or the Nigeria Police Force.
The commissioner described the development as a suspected case of child trafficking, stressing that no private agreement, parental consent or informal arrangement could legally authorise the sale or transfer of a child.
In a video released alongside the statement, Uchenna reportedly admitted that she gave the young mother ₦300,000 from the ₦2.5 million allegedly realised from the transaction.
She was, however, unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the whereabouts of the remaining funds when questioned by the commissioner.
The alleged buyer was also present during the questioning.
Onyekesi subsequently informed both parties that they would be handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The commissioner reiterated that matters involving child welfare, adoption and custody must strictly follow due legal procedures, warning individuals and organisations against taking advantage of vulnerable mothers and children.
The latest development comes amid renewed efforts by the Anambra State Government to strengthen child protection and clamp down on illegal adoption, child trafficking and other practices that threaten the safety and dignity of children.
The suspects remain subject to investigation, and allegations against them have not been established in court.
